China Seeks Support for Syria Peace Plan from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and France
Beijing, March 9 (RHC)-- China is sending an envoy to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and France to explain Beijing's proposal for a cease-fire in Syria. Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin announced Friday at a regular press briefing in Beijing that Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Zhang Ming will meet with Arab League leaders during the seven-day trip, which begins Sunday.
China is promoting a proposal calling for an immediate cease-fire in Syria and talks by all parties, which has been accepted by the government of President Bashar al-Assad. It welcomes the appointment of special UN envoy Kofi Annan, opposes any intervention by outside forces, calls for the support of humanitarian relief efforts and respect for Syria's sovereignty.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the assistant minister will visit France for two days, from March 14th through the 16th, to discuss the Syrian situation as well as issues of common interest between Beijing and Paris.
