China Calls for Truce between Syrian Government and Opposition Forces
Beijing, April 10 (RHC) China reiterated its call for a truce between the Syrian government and the opposition forces and for them to both respect the peace agreement proposed by U.N.-Arab League Special Envoy Kofi Annan.
Liu Weimin, the spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said that Beijing supports Annan's plan. China and Russia have protected Syria against United Nations sanctions on various occasions in defense of President Bashar al-Assad, over the last year of conflict, which has left an estimated 9,000 people dead. China´s call comes on the date set for the withdrawal of Assad's troops from residential areas, as an initiation of the internationally approved truce.
