Heavy Rains Claim Ten Lives and Displace Thousands in La Hispaniola
Port au Prince, April 26 (RHC)—At least 10 people died and 11 thousand were displaced by floods caused by heavy rains in the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Haiti´s Civil Protection agency said that rains affecting the island over the past three days caused nine deaths, including a six-year old child, plus a dozen of people injured, while streets and neighborhoods are flooded.
The UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs said that six people died on Monday in Haiti, Prensa Latina news agency reported.
Meanwhile, a man died in the attempt to take his herd across a river in the Dominican Republic, where over 11 thousand people were evacuated, according to the local Emergency Operations Center.
