Santo Domingo, May 21 (RHC) -- The candidate of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party, Danilo Medina, won the presidential elections, according to the latest report by the Central Electoral Committee.

According to official preliminary results, after counting more than 90 percent of ballots, Medina had a narrow lead of little more than 51 percent of the votes; while his main challenger, Hipolito Mejia of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, garnered 47 percent of the votes.

The results were disclosed by the Central Electoral Committee in its seventh official report, saying that it would be enough for Medina to secure an outright first-round victory. However, the report failed to include turn-out figures of an election day characterized by some incidents and irregularities, according to international observers.

To win and avoid a June run-off vote, one candidate must garner over 50 percent of the votes.
