Andean Community Focuses on Social Issues
Lima, May 24 (ANDINA-RHC) -- Secretary General of the Andean Community (CAN), Adalid Contreras, said that its four member countries will be putting great emphasis on social policies to reduce poverty by 2019, the 50th anniversary of the Andean bloc.
Contreras said that despite Latin America’s improved performance in recent years, due to higher prices for metals and economic growth, it remains the most unequal region in the world.
In statements to Andina news agency, the top CAN official said: “To overcome this situation, we are setting concrete goals and results in terms of social policies.”
Contreras added that CAN members -- Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia -- have made great progress in developing social policies to reduce economic and social differences. He said: “Initiatives are important at a national level, but we should focus on regional proposals.”
Contreras went on to say that CAN ministers have also proposed an Andean economic and social cohesion strategy that seeks to fight poverty and social inequality.
