Kofi Annan Will Review Efforts in Russia to Resolve Syrian Crisis
Moscow, July 13 (RHC)-- United Nations and Arab League Special Envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, will discuss the crisis in that country with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday, July 16th. According to a report by the Russian Foreign Ministry, the talks will address the current situation in the Middle Eastern nation, where government forces face armed groups financed and supplied from foreign countries.
A statement released in Moscow says that one of the topics in the talks will be whether or not to extend the mission of UN observers for another three months. Their current mandate in Syria expires on July 21st.
Russia has proposed a draft resolution at the UN Security Council, supported by China, to extend the term of that mission, which is part of a six-point plan of Annan to seek a political solution to the dispute in Syria.
Moscow announced that it will oppose any initiative that contains threats or allow the use of force against the legitimate government of President Bashar al-Assad.
