Russia to veto UK resolution on Syria observer mission
Moscow, July 20, (RHC), -- Russia has said it will bloc a British-backed draft resolution seeking to extend the UN observer mission in Syria for a "final" 30 days.
Moscow, however, backs a Pakistani proposal that will extend the mission for 45 days, with the possibility of further renewals.
The UN is due to vote on whether to renew the mandate for its observer mission in Syria on Friday.
Syria has been the scene of escalating violence since protests against the government of President Bashar al-Assad began last year.
Thousands have been killed in the turmoil, mainly following the engagement of opposition armed groups in armed struggle against government forces.
The Syria observer mission was established as part of the UN special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan´s peace plan, to monitor the serious conflict in the Middle Eastern nation. /PRESSTV
