Syrian troops kill 40 insurgents in Homs as violence increases
Damascus, August. 3 (RHC) -- A Syrian army raid in central Homs province has left some 40 armed insurgents killed and others injured, state radio reported on Friday.
The operation has been conducted in Homs´ al-Hamidieh district, as part of efforts by government forces to purge several cities and towns besieged by rebels.
The news come increasing clashes and violence across the country has pushed special joint envoy for Syria Kofi Annan to resign, after expressing deep concern over the future of the peace process in that Arab nation..
Meanwhile, the state-run SANAnews agency said the Syrian troops have ambushed armed groups riding pickup trucks outfitted with PKC machine guns near Aleppoprovince, inflicting hefty toll on them.
Clashes continued in Salahuddien district in Aleppo, Daraa, and Tadamun in Damascus as well as in other places, recent reports indicated.
Also on Friday, the Palestinian Hamas movement posted a statement on its website, condemning "the heinous crime that targeted Yarmouk camp" for Palestinian refugees in Syria, which has left 20 people killed.
Two mortar shells struck the camp in the early hours of Thursday from the nearby Tadamun distinct. The Syrian government said armed "terrorists" were behind the carnage. /XINHUA
