Old Havana, formerly known as San Cristóbal de la Habana, is celebrating the 494th anniversary of the city’s establishment on November 16th.
Concerts, exhibitions and other activities make up the program that will turn Havana into the venue of art celebrations and performances. The traditional ceremony is set to start on November 15 on the eve of its foundation, at six p.m., from the Captain Generals Palace up to El Templete, the commemorative monument that marks the site where San Cristóbal de la Habana is supposed to have been set up in 1519.
Havana’s Historian, Eusebio Leal, will pronounce the eulogy. That day hundreds of Havana residents will show up at El Templete to pay tribute to the city in one of its most deeply-rooted traditions. Under the shade of the monument’s silk cotton tree or “ceiba” Habaneros meet up, walk around the tree three times and make three wishes.
