High-Level OAS Mission Set to Visit Honduras

Tegucigalpa, August 22 (RHC)-- A high-level mission from the Organization of American States (OAS) is set to visit Honduras on Monday, the 24th. Made up of several foreign ministers of OAS member states, the delegation will attempt to work for the reestablishment of constitutional order in the Central American country.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the delegation will be composed of José Miguel Insulza, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, and the foreign ministers of Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Panama. The group will be in Tegucigalpa until Tuesday and are slated to meet with representatives of the Honduran Supreme Court of Justice, the Congress, the Catholic Church, as well as organizations that oppose the military-backed regime in Honduras.

José Miguel Insulza told reporters on Saturday that he is encouraged by the possibility of dialogue and an apparent willingness to listen to all of the players in Honduras." The OAS, which expelled the regime from the regional organization shortly after the military coup in June, recognizes the legitimate president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya.

A delegation from the Inter-American Court of Justice toured Honduras earlier this week and found serious violations of human rights and repressive methods carried out by the illegal military regime.
