Cuban Five Defense Team Says the Battle Continues

Havana, August 22 (RHC) - The team of defense lawyers representing the Five Cuban antiterrorists prisoners unfairly held in US prisons, said, at a press conference in Havana, that the political battle for the release of these men must go on.

CIA Interrogation Sessions Used Mock Executions

Washington, August 22 (RHC)-- U.S. Central Intelligence Agency interrogators used a handgun and an electric drill to try to get information from a prisoner in one of its secret jails. According to The Washington Post, the tactics were used on at least one detainee -- but observers say similar mock executions may have been used on many other prisoners under the control of the CIA.

Could you give us your perspective on where we stand in the case of the Cuban Five?

THOMAS GOLDSTEIN (expert on Supreme Court litigation): The direct appeals in the case of the Cuban Five have concluded with the severe disappointment of the U.S. Supreme Court not agreeing to review the case. We obviously believe that the Supreme Court should have considered the serious flaws in the case and should have reversed the convictions of the Five. But the efforts on behalf of the Five have not concluded, indeed they haven't slowed down.

What Happened to Checks and Balances?

On June 15, 2009, the US Supreme Court announced its decision to reject the request for a revision of the Cuban Five case. This demand for a review was carried out by millions of people from all walks of life around the world, a record number of “Friends of the Court” petitions and thousands of personalities and elected officials from every continent. All of these pleas also came from within the USA itself.
