The Tycoon vs. China, immigrants and polls

By: Roberto Morejón

Egocentric par excellence, US President Donald Trump is irritated by the results of local media polls that show his popularity falling to the lowest level in 100 days of government reached by any other president in 70 years.

The approval of the Republican in the White House is 41 percent and decreased four points since March and in comparison, with February he lost seven points, according to CNN.

The president's positive image is at 35 percent and only 22 percent strongly support the administration of the ruler, who angrily called pollsters "negative criminals".

Many are wondering why the media, which was so condescending to him during the last election and his first weeks in the Oval Office, is now reporting such unfavorable statistics.

The media explored the opinions of Americans who said they had lost confidence in the leader because of his handling of the economy, as they said the imposition of tariffs had created volatility in the markets and alarmed them about an imminent rise in prices.

Another aspect that has been criticized is his management of immigration, including deportations, many of them in degrading conditions and against court orders, such as that of the Salvadoran Kilmar Abrego García.

Growing segments of the population have spoken out against the transfer of immigrants, all criminals in Trump's parlance, to high-security prisons in El Salvador, where Washington has President Nayib Bukele as a staunch ally.

While Immigration Czar Tom Homan promises to triple raids against undocumented immigrants, more than a few Americans, polls show, reproach the Republican administration's attack on public workers, social cuts and attacks on universities where they demonstrate in favor of the Palestinians.

If the real estate magnate does not believe in the dissent reflected in the polls, he should observe the two gigantic mobilizations in the streets, their shouts and the irreverent texts displayed on banners.

It is not by threatening the media, judges, teachers, students and artists that the government of the day can validate the belief that it supports.
