Havana, Jun 7 (RHC) Today, the Nicaraguan national soccer team qualified to the third qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup, after defeating Guyana 1-0 and topping Group D of the second phase of the CONCACAF qualifying round.
At Managua's national stadium, a goal by Nicaraguan striker Jaime Moreno in the 41st minute was enough to defeat the Caribbean team last night and advance to the next phase to be played in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Thus, the blue and white team coached by Chilean Marco António Figueroa finished at the top of Group D of the second phase of the North, Central American and Caribbean Football Confederation (Concacaf) qualifiers, and advanced to the next round for the 12 best teams.
The Nicaraguan team managed to take 23 shots, including four on goal, while the Guyana team took 13, of which three were on goal.
The final round of CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup will be played between September and November with the participation of 12 teams divided into three groups of four.
According to the tournament rules, each team will play six games (home and away) and the top three in each group will advance to the 2026 World Cup.
The Nicaraguan team, which leads its group with nine points, will play its last game of the second phase against Panama (six points) next Tuesday.
