Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, met this Monday with experts and scientists to assess the country’s epidemiological situation, marked by the behavior of arboviruses and other communicable diseases, according to the Presidency’s website.

Dr. Carilda Peña García, Vice Minister of Public Health, reported that cases of nonspecific febrile syndrome decreased by 2.4 percent nationwide, although seven provinces reported increases, mainly Las Tunas, Holguín, and Pinar del Río.

According to Peña García, dengue transmission remained stable compared to the previous week, with cases in 14 provinces, 43 municipalities, and 51 health areas. He added that chikungunya showed a 25.9 percent reduction in the last three weeks, with 38,342 accumulated cases, of which 1,241 were confirmed.

Dr. Raúl Guinovart Díaz, Director of Science and Technology at the University of Havana, explained that mathematical prediction models indicate an unfavorable scenario in the coming weeks, which necessitates maintaining vector control measures.

Regarding the Oropouche virus, he specified that no new cases have been reported since September 26. As for acute respiratory infections, he noted a sustained decrease over the last five weeks, although he warned that a period of seasonal increase is beginning.

COVID-19 surveillance remained active, with 13 diagnoses in October and more than 3,400 tests conducted throughout the year, showing no changes in the circulation of the Omicron strain and its subvariants.

At the meeting, specialists from the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine presented new technologies for controlling the Aedes aegypti mosquito, such as the sterile insect technique, genetic modification, and the use of bacteria, validated by the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization.

Díaz-Canel emphasized the need to implement these alternatives sustainably and permanently, with a view to strengthening the national strategy for combating arboviruses.
