13th International Art Biennial gets underway Friday

Havana, April 12 (RHC)--  The Cuban capital and other cities are the venues of the 13th International Fine Art Biennial with the participation of over 300 artists from 52 countries.

After the opening at the Havana based Wifredo Lam Center, the institution that organizes and sponsors the most important visual arts gathering on the island, Cuban and international audiences can see exhibitions and other artistic actions in the Old Havana network of cultural institutions as of 10:30 a.m., such as the performance of Mexico’s Tania Candiani at El Quitrín and Jorge Méndez Blake at the Poetry House, the personal exhibitions of Morocco’s Mehdi Georges Hahlou at the Colonial Art Museum; Spanish-Brazilian artist Sara Ramoy, Panama’s Ela Spalding at the Martínez Villena Library; Philippine artist Geraldine Javier at the House of Asia, Spain’s Max de Esteban, France’s Emmanuel Tussore and Morocco’s Leila Alaoui at Cuba’s Photo Archive.

At 9 p.m. music will say hello to the Biennial and celebrate the 500th anniversary of the establishment of Havana at a concert by pianist José María Vitier, soprano Bárbara Llanes and singers Ivette Cepeda and David Torrens in Arms Square.

On the threshold of the biennial’s opening, art exhibits featuring different expressions of contemporary art creation on the island opened at Havana’s Grand Theater Alicia Alonso, the Collage Havana Gallery and the Ensemble Workshop. The 13th International Art Biennial which is scheduled to wind up May 12th includes other venues in the cities of Pinar del Río, Matanzas, Cienfuegos and Camagüey.
