Russia’s Friendship with Cuba Society to inaugurate photo exhibition on links between Yuri Gagarin and Cuba

Moscow, March 12 (RHC)—Russia’s Friendship with Cuba Society has announced the inauguration in April of a photo exhibition on the close links that Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin maintained with Cuba.

In statements to Europe channel for Cuba, the president of the Society Alexey Lavrov said the exhibition will be inaugurated in the framework of activities on the 60th anniversary of Gagarin becoming the first human to journey into outer space.

On April 12, 1961, aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin becomes the first human being to travel into space. During the flight, the 27-year-old test pilot and industrial technician also became the first man to orbit the planet, a feat accomplished by his space capsule in 89 minutes.

The president of the Friendship with Cuba Society said that the exhibition will be on display in nearly 30 cities across Russia. It comprises 40 images, many of them photos of Gagarin taken during visits here to Cuba.

Lavrov noted that both Gagarin and Cuban Revolution Commander Ernesto Guevara ‘Che’ attended the official creation of the Soviet Society of friendship with Cuba on November 11th, 1964 in Moscow. Gagarin himself served as president of the friendship society for four years.

At present, the Russian Friendship with Cuba Society develops several activities in and outside Russia in support of the Caribbean state and against Washington’s blockade policy.

In 2020, the solidarity organization collected signatures in support of the international campaign asking the Nobel Committee to grant a peace prize to Cuba’s Henry Reeve Brigade of Doctors Specializing in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics for their contribution to the global fight against Covid-19.

The president of the Russian Friendship with Cuba Society urged solidarity activists and Cuba friends to participate next March 27th in an international caravan for Cuba and against the US blockade. He further announced that in 2022, Moscow will host the European Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, which was to be held in June this year, but had to be postponed due to the epidemiological situation generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
