Cuba to concentrate pre-selection for Junior Pan American Games

Havana, September 7 (RHC/JIT)-- The more than 400 athletes and coaches members of the pre-selection formed by Cuba for the First Pan American Junior Games of Cali 2021 will begin to meet from Thursday at the Cerro Pelado and Giraldo Córdova Cardín high performance schools.

The decision was confirmed in a meeting held in the first of those centers, where Oscar Nuevo, head of the technical-methodological section of the Inder's High Performance Directorate, said that a day later Ciego de Avila will host the male wrestling exponents.

After pointing out that the freestyle girls will be part of the large group summoned to the capital, the executive insisted on the priority to be assigned to the protocols associated with the confrontation with COVID-19.

"All the preparation processes must be subordinated to the hygienic-sanitary measures that allow to avoid the impacts of the pandemic", he emphasized in an analysis also encouraged by specialists from the Institute of Sports Medicine.

Its director, Dr. Pablo Castillo, explained that the strategy designed for this purpose will include 10 initial days of isolation, during which PCR tests and other actions will be carried out prior to going out to the training scenarios.

It was also assured that the entire period leading up to the event, scheduled from November 25 to December 5, will be covered in conditions of permanent concentration, with a design adjusted to the time available and the purposes identified by the technical groups.

Cuba accumulates more than 150 slots in 24 disciplines after the five secured today by swimming, which added three women and two men.

Earlier, badminton (2-2), handball (14-14), baseball (22 v), boxing (7 v), canoeing (1-1), cycling (3-3), diving (4-4), fencing (2-3), rhythmic gymnastics (7 f), karate (1 v), weightlifting (2-3), wrestling (12-6) and artistic swimming (8-1).

Also, race skating (2 v), figure skating (1 v), modern pentathlon (1-2), rowing (2 f), table tennis (2-2), taekwondo (2-2), shooting (1 v), archery (1-1), triathlon (2-2), sailing (2-1) and beach volleyball (2-2).
