Another death due to COVID-19 hits Cuban baseball

Havana, October 1 (RHC)-- Cuban baseball mourns a new death due to COVID-19.  After several days of battle against the cruel disease, Yoani Delgado, a member of Cuba's youth and Sancti Spíritus teams in the national series, passed away on Thursday at the age of 39.

"The sadness invades your family, baseball, your people to whom you gave so much joy many times in the Luis Torres stadium (Yaguajay) where you stood as a baseball player from the example of your father (José Raúl Delgado)," wrote dismayed journalist Elsa Ramos.

She recalled that the former baseball player and coach unfortunately could not overcome the COVID, "neither with his 39 years, nor with the strength he kept after years behind the home plate in the teams of his native Yaguajay and Sancti Spíritus, nor with the solidarity of so many people who donated him medicines, comfort, hope."

"He could not, not even with the vigil of days of his father Jose Raul Delgado and his mother Yolanda outside the Provincial Hospital Camilo Cienfuegos, where he was accompanied, also for days, who were his teammates: Frederich Cepeda, Ismel Jimenez, Yunior Ibarra, Ifreidi Coss, Pedro Alvarez, Jose Luis Saez, Roberto Ramos, Miguel Rojas ... and many others."

Yoanis Delgado Pedroso defended himself with claws against that damned disease as he did in the catcher's office of the Yaguajay team or the Gallos del Yayabo.  "You fought until the last minute, then Yaguajay all expected a miracle from the one who with only 39 years of life preserved the physical strength that many times gave a home run in the middle of a provincial championship when the Luis Torres shuddered and stood up to applaud you."

"From your simplicity and seriousness you stood as a player who knew how to win the affection of a people who admired you along with your family, the same one that I always found in the stands supporting you, because (his parents) Yolanda and José Raúl were more punctual than the fans."
