Havana, October 19 (RHC) Obstacles and complex paper work that make it difficult for Cuba to take part at first-level baseball meets are part of the consequences of the US blockade of the island.

The absurd and hostile US policy is an obstacle to  the participation of a Cuban team at the February 2014 Caribbean Baseball Series to take place in Margarita Island, Venezuela. The Cuban team, which won the latest local series, is still waiting for a special license from the US government to contest the Caribbean championship.

The director of International Relations at Cuba's Sports Institute, Pedro Cabrera, said that the situation reveals the extraterritorial nature of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba.

In statements to the Cuban News Agency, Cabrera said that the island's participation at the Caribbean Baseball Series depends on the US license, which was backed by the US Major Baseball Leagues.

The president of the Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation Juan Francisco Puello announced in mid 2013 that Cuba would return to the traditional Caribbean championship, but shortly after that announcement obstacles began to surface due to the hostile US policy against the island.

Such obstacles are the same ones that got in the way of Cuba to attend the World Baseball Classic, and which also prevented the island from receiving the prizes related to its participation in the latest top events,  Cabrera said.

The official said that the measure prevented Cuba from receiving over two million 100 thousand dollars, which were frozen in the United States in a bank account under the US Major Baseball Leagues.
