Cali, November 29 (RHC)-- Nine Cubans will compete this Tuesday in the opening day of athletics at the First Junior Pan American Games Cali-Valle 2021, among them the discus athletes Silinda Morales and Melany Matheus, candidates for the gold and silver medals.

In addition to Silinda (number one of all those registered with 63.17 m) and Matheus (second with 59.34), javelinist Yarobis Contreras and long jumper Yanisley Carrión will also be in the finals, competing for medals.

Contreras, 21 years old, has a best record of 69.30 m, and in order to reach the podium she will have to improve her mark, since six of the 10 competitors have better records.

Something similar is happening to the lanky Carrión, who has the seventh best mark of the 10 competitors (6.20 m).

The other Cubans who will participate this Tuesday in the opening of athletics in the emblematic Pascual Guerrero stadium will share in qualifying or accumulative events.

They are Yan Carlos Hernández, who will be in the first five events of the decathlon, Jens Fernández and Laura Moreira, in the 100 m heats, and Ariliannis Colas and Yoao Illas, in the 400 m hurdles.

More than 400 athletes from 31 countries will compete in the Cali-Valle 2021 athletics tournament and the champions will obtain direct tickets to the Santiago de Chile-2023 Pan American Games.
