Havana, May 24 (RHC)-- The director of the National Commission of Races and Walks (CNCC), Carlos Gattorno, reported on Tuesday that the Cuba-Russia Friendship Race will be held in Havana this Saturday, May 28th.

He explained to the weekly Jit in its digital edition that the event will honor the 77th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union's Red Army over fascism and the end of World War II.

The organizers postponed the sixth edition of the race due to the explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in the Cuban capital on May 6, which left 46 people dead.

Recently, the counselor of the Russian Embassy in Havana, Serguei Oboznov, said that the race will start in front of the diplomatic headquarters at 10:00 local time.

He said that all the categories summoned by the National Commission of Marabana-Maracuba Races and Walks will be able to participate, and the awards ceremony will take place at the finish line, also located in front of the embassy.

Oboznov recalled what the triumph of the Russian forces over the German army during World War II represented and the cost of lives for the people of the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

He also admitted his pleasure at the return of the event after two years without convening due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For his part, the second head of the CNCC, Juan Carlos Mesa commented that the event will be a walking race of about four kilometers.

"We invite children, adolescents, young people, senior citizens, people with disabilities, in short, anyone who wishes to participate, to celebrate together the victory over fascism," he said.
