Havana, June 13 (ACN) - The Cuban men's duo of Osleni Guerrero and Leodannis Martinez won the silver medal in the XII edition of the Badminton Open, which concluded this Sunday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Guerrero and Martinez were beaten in the title discussion by the Japanese Ayato Endo and Yuta Takei, who proved to be better on the court by winning with scores of 21-13 and 21-19.

Despite falling in the final for the Cuban racquetball players, this result can be considered excellent, since they had not competed in international events for more than two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On their way to the dispute for the crown, the representatives of the island defeated the local pair of Daiverson Pereira and Ronarki Reyes, 21-12 and 21-5, without much difficulty, in the quarterfinals.

Then, they came from behind in one of the semifinals to defeat Guatemalans Solis Jonathan and Anibal Marroquin 19-21, 21-14 and 21-12, according to the official website of the event.

Also in that tournament in the mixed pairs specialty, Guerrero and Thalia Mengana were eliminated this Saturday in the semifinal round, losing 12-21 and 15-21 against Sumiya Nihei and Minami Asakura, from Japan.

Previously they had come back to win in three sets against Guatemalans Cristopher Martinez and Mariana Isabel Paiz, with scores of 13-21, 21-18 and 21-11; while last Friday they both debuted with a 21-13 and 21-10 success over hosts Nelson Javier and Lia Lockward.

The Badminton Open in Santo Domingo opened the qualification process for the Central Caribbean and Pan American Multisport Games of 2023.
