Quito, February 24 (RHC)-- The Progressive International, made up of intellectuals and politicians from around the world, has warned about a coup against democracy that, in its opinion, is brewing in Ecuador since the recent general elections.

The organization expressed that "a violent reaction against democracy is taking place" in the South American country.  "The government of Lenín Moreno is preparing a coup against democracy," the statement added.

"Reactionary forces - both within Ecuador and throughout the hemisphere - are leading a dirty and dishonest campaign to eliminate Arauz, delay the elections and prevent the formation of a progressive, indigenous and feminist bloc," the statement reads.

The Progressive International also points out that the recount of votes currently underway in Ecuador is the expression of the strategy to postpone the second round and extend the permanence of the current Executive in the Government.

It is an "unprecedented recount of votes, which threatens to hinder the democratic process.... Let's be clear: there was no legal basis for this 'recount' nor evidence of fraud to justify it ... The Government of Lenín Moreno is preparing a coup against democracy," affirmed the progressive group.
