Brasilia, March 8 (RHC)-- More than 11 million people have been infected with the coronavirus in Brazil since the confirmation of the first case of COVID-19 in the country on February 26, 2020.  According to figures from the Ministry of Health, in the last 24 hours 80,508 new cases and 1,086 deaths associated with the coronavirus were registered.

With these figures, the South American giant reached 11,019,334 confirmed cases and 265,411 deaths due to coronavirus.  Brazil, one of the three countries in the world most affected by the pandemic in absolute numbers -- together with the United States and India -- has a mortality rate of 126 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants and an incidence of 5,244 people infected in the same proportion.

Last week was the deadliest week in Brazil due to the coronavirus, according to the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass).  The average number of deaths in the last seven days reached the mark of 1,496, the highest recorded since the beginning of the health crisis.
