Colombian military and police repress demonstrators

Bogota, May 18 (RHC)-- Users of social networks denounced this Tuesday that the Mobile Anti-Riot Squad (ESMAD) of the Colombian police repressed on Monday night people who were demonstrating in several cities of Colombia, in the framework of the National Strike, which entered its 21st day.

The toll of injured left by this new repressive day is still uncertain, but the social networks speak of dozens of injured and several more detained and disappeared.  NGOs have reported around 50 deaths since the beginning of the National Strike, last April 28th.

Senator Iván Cepeda Castro posted on his Twitter account: "Today the night of police terror is in Caldas, Antioquia: cruel treatment against those arrested.  They cut electricity and the Internet while doing 'procedures.'  They shoot weapons of 'lesser lethality' against demonstrators, wounding them without killing them."

In the responses to the Colombian senator's tweet, several users reported that a similar situation was taking place in the municipality of Bello (Antioquia) and in the Romelia sector, with police beating protesters.

On its website, Blu Radio published that the actions of ESMAD against demonstrators in the municipality of Yumbo, located in the department of Valle del Cauca, left more than 30 people injured.

on Monday night, the President of Colombia, Iván Duque, ordered the security forces to deploy a maximum deployment to unblock the roads of demonstrators.
