Brasilia, August 11 (RHC)-- Members of the National Union of Students (UNE) of Brazil and other youth organizations carried out a national mobilization on Wednesday, through which they demand quality public education and call for the resignation of President Jair Bolsonaro.

In messages disseminated through the social network Twitter, the UNE informs that the student mobilization is part of the Out with Bolsonaro campaign, whose fourth demonstration took place last July 24.

The events planned for this Wednesday coincide with the Day of the Student in Brazil and the 84th anniversary of the founding of the UNE. The Brazilian Union of High School Students (UBES), the National Association of Graduate Students (Anpgl) and the Union of Socialist Youth (AJS) are also taking part in them.

The call for this day of struggle denounces the budget cuts in universities. According to the president of the student organization, Bruna Brelaz, in the midst of the pandemic it is urgent to strengthen education, but the Government chooses to discard it. This is unacceptable, she stressed.

The youth leader also criticizes that the Executive does not implement policies to make educational processes more inclusive. She also questions the fact that the Ministry of Education does not have investment projects or proposals to adapt schools for the safe return to on-site classes.

In addition to joining the demand that Bolsonaro be impeached for his management of the pandemic and other reasons, the UNE also demands that more resources be allocated to education.

Other demands are the intensification of vaccination against the coronavirus, the extension to 600 reais (US$106) of emergency aid for informal workers, the unemployed and poor families, and that the companies Eletrobras and the Post Office not be privatized.

UNE is considered one of the most visible youth organizations in the Out with Bolsonaro campaign. Among its priorities for this period is to mobilize students on relevant issues such as increasing retention rates and reducing dropout rates.

In this regard, this Tuesday, the organization filed before the Supreme Federal Court (STF) an appeal to reopen enrollment with exemption to students who during 2020 could not meet the justification deadline due to Covid-19.

This appeal, called Argument of Non-Compliance with a Fundamental Precept, was filed with the co-sponsorship of the Workers' Party and other political forces and, according to local media, would benefit millions of low-income students.
