Fire in New York City kills 19 and injuries dozens

New York City, January 9 (RHC)-- Some 19 people, including nine children, were killed and dozens of others were injured in a fire in a New York apartment in the Bronx neighborhood.

The fire broke out in the house in an old nineteen-story building and then quickly spread throughout the complex called Twin Park.

"It is one of the worst fires in the city's recent history," said New York's fire marshal. The number of injured would be 63, of which at least 32 were hospitalized.

"This is a horrible, horrible, painful moment for the city of New York, and the impact of this fire will really bring a level of pain and despair in our city," New York Mayor Eric Adams told CNN.

Firefighters encountered "very dense smoke, very dense fire" in the hallways, plus victims were found in the stairwells on every floor of the building, many in cardiac arrest.

"It could be an unprecedented loss of life. The injuries were predominantly from smoke inhalation," recounted one of the firefighters.

Last Sunday a fire in a Philadelphia building killed 12 people, including 8 children.
