Mexico City, February 22 (RHC)-- Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) reports that they detained more than 5,000 irregular migrants in the last week.   The INM indicated that the migrants intercepted in the last seven days come from 23 countries, mostly from Central and South America, followed by other nations such as Nepal, China, Senegal, Russia, India, Romania, Switzerland and Gambia, among others.

Among the captured migrants, 793 minors were found, although the immigration institute did not specify how many of them were traveling unaccompanied by their parents.  The Mexican immigration authority justified the detention of the 5,020 migrants with the argument that they were foreigners who were traveling through the country without the proper immigration documentation.

In the text, the INM reiterated its commitment to maintain a safe and orderly migration with full respect for the rights of migrants transiting through Mexican territory.

The detentions, which the INM calls rescues, are a reflection of the record migratory flow that the region is experiencing towards the United States, whose Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detected more than 1.7 million undocumented migrants at the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021.

During 2021, Mexico deported more than 114,000 foreigners, according to data from the Migration Policy Unit of the country's Ministry of the Interior.
