Bogota, October 22 (RHC) -- The president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, has said that Colombia's political and economic model is not up for discussion in Havana. He was referring to ongoing negotiations with the rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

At a public event on Monday in Bogota, Santos said: "There is nothing being negotiated in Havana that could derail our democratic system.

"Let me be clear, neither the structure of the state, nor our political or economic model, the future of the Armed Forces, or anything like that, are the subject of discussions in Havana."

However, the president stressed that negotiations must continue with impetus, because "Colombia has to find a solution to this conflict."

Peace talks between the FARC and the Colombian government began in Havana in November 2012. The parties have reached consensus on the issue of land reform, including land for poor farmers and policies to fight rural poverty and inequality.

Four others issues, which still remain unsolved, are FARC’s participation in politics, an end to alleged drug trafficking, turning over arms, and compensating the victims of the 50-year conflict that has killed an estimated 600,000 people and displaced some three million others.
