Vatican City, April 25 (RHC)-- Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church, has announced that he plans to travel to Argentina in 2024, a pending visit since 2017, after suspending a tour where nations such as Chile, Uruguay and his home country were included.

Francis' pontificate completed 10 years last March 13, a period during which he never returned to Argentina, despite having made multiple trips abroad, including to Africa this year.  The supreme pontiff said in an interview last month that he wanted to travel to the country of origin, although he did not give precisions about the possible date of the visit.

This was assured by the supreme pontiff in dialogue with LA NACION; next year there will be no elections in the country, so he would avoid any political or partisan connotation to his visit. pic.twitter.com/seVclK0Gtx

According to those close to him, the pope's decision to travel in 2024 has to do with the fact that he never chooses election years to make his visits.  Jorge Bergoglio has not visited Argentina since 2013, when he was elected pope. He had planned to travel to the country in 2017 as part of a tour of Chile and Uruguay, but the passage through the southern nation was suspended due to different circumstances.

In Argentina, former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio is eagerly awaiting his visit and prayed for a speedy recovery from bronchitis, which recently kept him hospitalized in Rome.
