New Delhi, October 25 (RHC)-- Three men in India have gang-raped a 13-year-old girl and killed her afterwards by setting her on fire in yet another appalling case of rape-and-murder in the South Asian country.
Indian media reported this week that the incident took place in the Sirsa Kalaar District of the city of Orai in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. The girl was reportedly heading to a farm with her older sister when they were attacked by the three men.
The girl's father said that when she and her sister "told the trio that they would report the rape to authorities, they set her on fire and escaped."
According to reports, the girl's older sister ran off to get help, but when she was back, the girl was already suffering from life-threatening burns.
She died at a hospital after "receiving burns over 80 percent of her body," the Times of India reported.
Police is now in search of a man identified as Ram Bahadur and the two others suspected in the rape.
Cases of rape and subsequent murder seem to not only be rising in India but also inciting public outrage and demands.
In 2012, a 23-year-old medical student was brutally gang-raped by six men in a bus in New Delhi. She later died of internal injuries in hospital. The incident provoked nationwide protests demanding tougher regulations against perpetrators of rape.
