Brasilia, July 19 (RHC)-- Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, and White House President Donald Trump on Thursday for the 50 percent tariffs imposed by the United States.

At the 60th Congress of the National Union of Students in Goiânia, Lula defended Brazilian sovereignty and accused Bolsonaro of treason, in addition to questioning his management during the COVID-19 pandemic.  "He will be prosecuted for COVID-19, for the number of people who died due to his irresponsibility," he stated.

He also singled out Bolsonaro's son, federal representative Eduardo Bolsonaro, for promoting actions against Brazil from the US. Lula called both of them "the biggest traitors of the century in this country" and lamented that the former president "embraces" the American flag instead of the Brazilian one.

Lula to Trump: No "GRINGO" is going to give orders to the president of Brazil

Regarding Trump, he said that "it's not a gringo who's going to give orders to this President of the Republic."  Along those lines, Lula highlighted the work of the Brazilian judiciary and compared the situation to the assault on the U.S. Capitol in January 2021, following Trump's electoral defeat.

"If Trump lived in Brazil and tried to do in Brazil what he did at the Capitol, he would certainly be tried and could end up in jail," he stated.  Meanwhile, he highlighted the 200 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United States, insisting that no country should interfere in Brazilian internal affairs.

Furthermore, the president pointed out that Brazil has maintained a trade deficit with the US for 15 years, contradicting Trump's justifications for the tariffs. According to Lula, the former US president also cited an alleged "witch hunt" against Bolsonaro as a reason for the tariffs.

In addition, in a symbolic gesture, Lula received a Brazilian flag during his speech and emphasized the importance of national unity. "We are going to take the green and yellow flag," he said, generating enthusiasm among those present.

He also urged Bolsonaro to "transfer his title" to the US if he prefers that country, reiterating that "we Brazilians are the ones in charge." Lula highlighted his experience in negotiations, asserting that it surpasses Trump's.

"I am sure that the American president never negotiated even 10 percent of what I negotiated," he stated, underscoring his intention to respond to the tariffs in a "civilized" and "democratic" manner.
