Bogota, November 25 (teleSUR-RHC)-- The Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) Ernesto Samper announced Monday that the regional bloc will discuss a proposal to establish regulations for a common South American passport at their next summit to be held on December 5th in Quito.

The former Colombian president said the proposal for a South American Passport will allow “400 million people to move freely through 18,000 square kilometers in the region.”

The UNASUR summit will also mark the inauguration of the new headquarters of the organization just north of Quito. Nine South American leaders have already confirmed their attendance and multiple cultural activities scheduled as part of the event.

UNASUR also announced a series of conferences, including a meeting with Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, and with former Brazilian

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in Guayaquil.

At the meeting, Suriname will hand over the presidency of UNASUR to Uruguay. Samper also said deputy foreign ministers from the bloc's member countries will meet to continue negotiating the agreements reached at a previous meeting in Bolivia, including the creation of a regional bank.
