Madrid, December 16 (RHC)-- Spanish riot police and protesters have clashed in the capital, Madrid, during a demonstration against government policies.  Over the weekend, some 3,000 people participated in the rally to protest against measures adopted by the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

According to police, the demonstration turned violent after protesters attacked police cars with sticks.  The protesters, who were outraged about the governments cutbacks on public services, called for a genuine social democracy in the European country.  They are also concerned about a new legislation, which they say infringes on their rights.  The new Public Safety Law draft proposes heavy fines of up to 600,000 Euros for activists who participate in unauthorized protests.

The bill must be approved by parliament where the ruling party has an absolute majority.  One protest organizer said: "The measures Mariano Rajoy's government is adopting are very unfair, they cut our rights back and we have to stop it."

The cash-strapped government of Spain has cut public spending across the board.  Education Minister Jose Ignacio Wert said earlier this year that his ministry had seen cuts of up to 7 percent over the past two years.  Spain suffers from the second highest level of unemployment in Europe after Greece, which had an unemployment rate above 27 percent in May.
