Havana, September 24 (RHC/acn)--Cuban Communist Party leader Jose Ramon Balaguer denounced in Havana the threat posed on Latin America by an on-going imperialist offensive against progressive governments.

Balaquer, who heads the Cuban Communist Party's International Relations Department, delivered the closing remarks on Friday at a seminar in Havana on the realities and challenges behind the intention to turn Latin America and the Caribbean into a Zone of Peace.

The current imperialist aggression must be met with a firm determination to resist by all nations against which the disrupting effort is aimed, said Balaguer, who dubbed as temporary the results of the so-called soft coups recently staged against progressive administrations in Argentina and Brazil.

The Cuban leader warned that these coups seek to promote internal conflicts in the nations and revert social achievements, and are a threat to peace.

Representatives of 12 countries, who attended the Havana forum, adopted a final declaration demanding the end of US-led destabilization campaigns against Latin American and Caribbean nations.

The seminar on the challenges and realities affecting the Caribbean and Latin America as a Zone of Peace also demanded the lifting of the over-50-year US economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba and the return of the Cuban territory of Guantanamo illegally occupied by a U.S. naval base against the will of the Cuban people.
