Cuba Attends Preparatory Meeting for World Expo 'Astana 2017'

Astaná, February 24 (RHC-PL)-- Cuba attended the Third Meeting of National Commissioners of the World Expo "Astana 2017," held in the capital's Independence Palace and welcomed representatives of 130 countries, diplomatic sources said today.

Just three months after its inauguration, delegates received technical and practical information on the world event, which will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan from June 10 to September 10, 2017 and will be dedicated to the energies of the future.

During the meeting, the Secretary General of the International Exhibition Office, Vicente Loscertales, recognized the great efforts of the Kazakh authorities to make the Expo Astana 2017 one of the best of this type of event.

On the closing day of the event, Cuba was unanimously elected to the Board of Commissioners.

The entity also comprises Angola, China, Comoros, Djibouti, Finland, France, Greece, Guinea, Japan, Italy, Madagascar, Monaco, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka and Switzerland, under the chairmanship of the National Commissioner for Lithuania.

The Cuban ambassador to Kazakhstan, Carlos Valdés de la Concepción, in his capacity as Cuba Section Commissioner, appointed for this event, thanked the election of his country, unique for the Latin American region, in this body of work.

Valdés recognized the honor he represents for his nation to be part of this important executive mechanism of the International Exhibition Office.

In addition, the diplomat stressed that his country attaches great importance to the theme of the Expo, recognizing its relevance as its nation aims to change its current energy matrix and to produce 24 percent of energy from renewable sources by the year 2030.

Cuba will present its progress in the use of renewable energies in the Latin American Pavilion.
