United Nations, October 14 (RHC)-- The Alternate Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ana Silvia Rodríguez, said Wednesday that the election of our country to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) shows the recognition of the international community to the island's history in this area.

On her official Twitter account, the diplomat also highlighted the isolation of the U.S. government in its policy of hostility towards the Caribbean nation.  She also questioned the attitude of the White House that tries to discredit Cuba, when it is responsible for several of the most brutal and well documented abuses and violations of human rights in recent history.

"It is the first and only country that has deliberately used atomic weapons against innocent civilians; and it used Agent Orange against the Vietnamese people," she said.

Rodriguez wrote on Twitter that the U.S. only cares about its own petty interests and turns its back on the international community's efforts to address global challenges.

The day before, 170 UN member states voted in favor of Cuba to join the HRC during the 2021-2023 period.

Cuba is a founding member of the Human Rights Council, created in 2006.
