The aftermath of a fire at a hospital in Baghdad on Sunday.

Havana, Apr 26 (RHC) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Monday extended his condolences to the Iraqi people and government for the victims of an accident at the Ibn al-Khatib hospital.

On Twitter, the foreign minister conveyed the message to the families and relatives of the more than 80 people killed and 112 injured due to a fire that occurred on Sunday.

According to reports from the Arab country's Ministry of the Interior, the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in the intensive care wing of the hospital after the explosion of poorly stored oxygen cylinders.

The fire spread rapidly through the facility, which was treating people infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Some of those evacuating the wounded held Health Minister Hassan al-Tamimi accountable. The official was sacked on Sunday.

According to a 2017 report, the hospital's intensive care unit lacked emergency exits or fire prevention systems.
