Ida left no significant damage in western Cuba

Havana, Aug 29 (RHC)-- Hurricane Ida's winds and rains did not cause significant damage in western Cuba, where it passed through on Friday afternoon and evening, according to a meeting of the Temporary Working Group for the prevention and control of the new coronavirus, held Saturday morning.

Headed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in the videoconference of the day, the governors of Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana, and Mayabeque, and the intendant of the Isle of Youth reported on the balances left by Ida in their territories.

The governor of Pinar del Río, Rubén Ramos Moreno, explained that more than 10,000 people were evacuated in the province. In the morning, less than 2,000 remained in centers and houses of families and friends.

In a preliminary assessment of the damages, he emphasized that the impact of the category 1 hurricane was felt more in the eastern municipalities of Consolación del Sur, Los Palacios, La Palma, and Viñales, through whose town of Puerto Esperanza.

He pointed out that there was not much damage to houses; the main effect is in the electric networks, where work has been carried out since very early on Saturday to reestablish them. In agriculture, the most significant consequences are in the banana, corn, and cassava crops, although they are not serious.

With maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour, Ida, with its showers and rains, initially affected the Isle of Youth, where the electric power system suffered the most significant damage, with the fall of poles and power lines.

The mayor of the particular municipality, Adiel Morera Macías, informed about the damages to houses, mainly to light roofs. At the same time, in agriculture the impact of the cyclone was felt especially in banana plantations.

Despite the scourge of the event, the Isle of Youth began the day with its services to the population working, the streets of the different localities are cleaned, and the electric service is being restored with agility.
