Cuba highlights first year with Eurasian Economic Union

Nursultan, Dec. 10 (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Friday highlighted the celebration of the Eurasian Economic Supreme Council, as the Caribbean nation completes its first anniversary as an observer state of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

During a virtual intervention in the meeting organized in Nursultan, the capital city of Kazakhstan,  the president said that during 2021 his country took steps to move towards a mutually beneficial relationship with the nations that make up the bloc, based on respect, trust, and collaboration.

Díaz-Canel said that since the last meeting in October, the Caribbean island has participated in the events organized by actors of the Union, including the session of the Intergovernmental Commission in Yerevan, Armenia, and the meetings between Heads of Customs on collaboration, exchange of information and mutual assistance.

He considered encouraging the country's exchanges with the Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Russian Direct Investment Fund to carry out studies to combine the Cuban and Russian vaccines against the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

He said that the results of this research could also be beneficial for the rest of the Eurasian partners and the possibility of producing and supplying Cuban vaccines, based on requests from the Union.

At the same time, he highlighted the participation of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia in the recently held II Cuba 2021 Business Forum.

The Cuban head of state announced the visit to Havana in the coming days of the Minister of Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), Sergey Glaziev, and the holding of the second session of the Joint Commission.

He informed that in this context, the signing of the Joint Collaboration Plan for the period 2021-2025, which includes more than 30 actions in the sectors of the economy, trade, finance, health, biotechnology, agro-industry, culture, sports, and communications, is foreseen.

He explained that these initiatives will contribute to the strengthening of inter-business ties and the alignment between the Strategic Guidelines for the Development of Eurasian Economic Integration until 2025 and Cuba's National Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030.

Díaz-Canel reiterated the Caribbean island's commitment to maintaining active participation as an observer state of the EEU.
