Havana, May 18 (RHC)-- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced the persistence of the digital divide in the world caused by the prevailing unjust world order.

On the occasion of World Telecommunications and Information Society Day on May 17, the top representative of the island's diplomacy affirmed on Twitter that almost three billion people, 37 percent of the planet's population, lack connection.

He also pointed out that 96 percent of them live in developing countries.

"The digital divide persists as a reflection of the profound inequalities caused by an unjust world order. This reality urgently needs to be changed," the Foreign Minister said.

For her part, the Minister of Communications, Mayra Arevich, said that the island prioritizes the development of telecommunications infrastructure to create capacities at all levels and ensure the accessibility of information and communication technologies.

World Telecommunications and Information Society Day is celebrated every May 17 to commemorate the founding of the International Telecommunications Union and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
