Cuban Vice President Checks on Preparations for the Sugar Harvest in Camaguey Province

Camaguey, November 18 (RHC) -- The importance and responsibility of the province of Camaguey in the forthcoming sugar harvest was stressed by Cuban Vice President Jose Ramón Machado Ventura during a tour of the cane producing areas.

Vice President Machado, who also serves as Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, visited four sugar mills that are being readied for the first of December. The official recalled that the province of Camaguey has been working to guarantee a twelve percent increase in sugar output this year over the 2012 harvest.

In statements to the media after concluding his tour, he said that the sugar mills have successfully completed their preparations and had all resources at hand for this task. At the same time, he noted, an increasing number of areas planted for cane are benefitting by improved irrigation. The sugar harvest in Camaguey should last 150 days of continuous operations.

Vice President Machado said the country trusts that the Camaguey sugar producers will meet their objectives and continue working towards the recovery of the industry, which is indispensable for the continued growth of the Cuban economy and the wellbeing of the nation.
