Havana, June 29 (RHC) Today, Cuba's women's softball team will seek to maintain its undefeated streak against Mexico in the continuation of the 11th Pan American Championship being held in this city.

After defeating the US Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic on the opening day, Professor Jorge Lamas's team secured one of the three spots available in Group B to advance to the Super Round yesterday, beating Brazil 2-0.

A hit by shortstop Leannelys Sayas in the fifth inning, which drove in two runs off a pitch by Gabriela Nishuichi, was enough to seal the victory for the Antilleans.

From the pitching circle, Yilian Tornés shone again, completing the game with 13 strikeouts, which puts her at the top of the tournament in that department, with 28 strikeouts in 14 innings of work.

Also standing out on offense were first baseman Maidelis Reyes, who went 2-for-2, and outfielder Jennifer Poncena, who sparked the decisive inning with a timely double.

Today's match against the also undefeated Aztecs, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. local time at José Manuel Amín Manzur Stadium, will determine first place in the group, a key factor since the results of this phase carry over to the next round.

This tournament awards five tickets to one of the World Cup phases and six spots for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
