World Aquatics Championsip Singapore 2025

Havana, July 15 (RHC) The organizers of the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore postponed the women's open water swimming event until tomorrow, World Aquatics announced today in a statement.

The women's 10-kilometer event was originally scheduled to kick off the program on Tuesday. Still, it was rescheduled for Wednesday due to water quality levels exceeding acceptable thresholds. It will now take place on the same day as the men's 10-kilometer competition.

Additionally, other open-water competitions were rescheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

While tests conducted in recent days have consistently shown that water quality at the venue meets World Aquatics' acceptable standards, analysis of samples taken on July 13 exceeded these standards. The decision to postpone the competition was made in the interest of the health and safety of the athletes, which remains the top priority of World Aquatics and the Singapore 2025 Organizing Committee, the organization said.

The following water sampling and water quality review sessions will continue to be conducted at the competition venue, during which World Aquatics and the Singapore 2025 Organizing Committee will determine whether conditions are safe to continue with the event at a later date, the letter added.

On Saturday, the new three-kilometer elimination speed trials for men and women will take place. This format made its international debut in September at the Junior Open Water Swimming World Championships in Alghero, Italy. Open water swimming will conclude with the 4 x 1,500-meter mixed relay.

This discipline already caused concern for those responsible for last year's Olympic Games in Paris due to the water quality in the Seine River. It also caused concern for the summer events in Tokyo in 2021 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
