A tribute in Spain to prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso

Havana, July 27 (RHC) -- The Insular Council of Mallorca, Spain, will pay tribute to prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso (1920-2019).

The homage marks the centennial of her birth and the 30th anniversary of the historic performance there along with the dancer Rudolph Nureyev and soprano Victoria de los Ángeles. The Palacio de la Misericordia will host the exhibit onWednesday, July 29, with unpublished shots by Oscar Pipkin, on that memorable performance by the late Cuban dancer of the ballet Poema del amor y del mar, choreographed by Alberto Méndez, and music score by Ernest Chausson and designs by Salvador Fernández.

According information provided by the Cuban National Ballet (BNC), the piece was premiered at the Palacio de la Misericordia, a historical monument in that town in Spain. The exhibition will be open to the public until September 12 and, in addition to the photos, audiences will enjoy the documentary Tres mitos para una noche, produced by the National Cuban Dance Museum, with texts by Pedro Simón and the making of Ioshinobu Navarro Sanler. According to the press release, the film includes details of that event and the choreography in its entirety, in which other BNC dancers and staff also participate.

The Cuban prima ballerina assoluta will be honored throughout the year with actions aimed at celebrating her centenary, which is celebrated on December 21. From various institutions a well-deserved tribute will be paid to the BNC's founder along with Alberto and Fernando Alonso, who  introduced the name of Cuba to the world of dance.
