Havana, June 10 (RHC) -- The Eusebio Leal Spengler Award will be granted for the first time on July 1st, 2021, as part of activities on Cuban Historian's Day.

The award is named after the great Cuban intellectual and historian of Havana, who died on July 31st, 2020.

It is organized by the Provincial Executive Committee of the Association of Cuban Historians in the capital, with co-sponsorship by the Havana Historian’s Office and the University of Havana.

Researchers and Cuban history professors at all levels, with relevant results over a 25-year or longer period, who have contributed to the knowledge, better understanding and dissemination of Cuba’s history are eligible for the Award.

A jury made up of renowned Cuban historians, presided over by PhD. Felix Julio Alfonso, associate historian of the Havana Historian’s Office, will conduct a thorough analysis of all the candidates.

On the first anniversary of his death this year, the Eusebio Leal Spengler Award is instituted as a permanent tribute to the man who served as Historian of Havana for 53 years and was also the director of the restoration project of Old Havana. Under his oversight, the historic center of the capital city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

One of Cuba’s most prominent intellectuals of all time, Leal authored books and hosted radio and television programs that recounted the city and its history.

“La Habana es un estado de ánimo” (Havana is a state of mind of which no one is indifferent), was one of his famous quotes. With this statement, he wanted to emphasize the eclectic character, the beauty and the charm of the Cuban capital.
