Timbalaye 2021

Havana, Sept. 18 (RHC)-- Female talent featured prominently in this year’s 13th edition of Cuba’s Rumba Festival ‘Timbalaye 2021’, which run Sept. 14th through the 17th, on digital platforms due to the complex epidemiological situation generated by Covid-19.

Precisely, a group of Cuban female musicians released the theme tune of the Project Team Cuba de la Rumba, an initiative that promotes Rumba and the work of female exponents of a dance and music genre that was originally performed solely by men.

The official YouTube channel of the Ministry of Culture, Canal Clave of Cuban television and the platform Streaming Cuba broadcast the presentation, which included the performance of singer-songwriter Thelmary and her band Habana Sana, Brenda Navarrete and Obini Bata, among others.

For the second consecutive year, the Ruta de la Rumba, as the festival is also known, displayed a broad virtual program of concerts, performances of folkloric groups from several provinces, rumba dance lessons, book launchings, interviews and exchanges with creators and exponents of Rumba, a flash back of unpublished memories of the previous editions of the festival and the international forum.

One of the most famous and well-known genres of popular Cuban music, Rumba was declared intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2016.

Other Rumba musicians and ensembles, offering their art in the framework of this year’s 13th edition of Timbalaye 2021 included Rumbalay, Obbá Koso, the children’s folklore group of Cienfuegos province, Muñequitos de Matanzas, Rumbatá and Pedro Celestino Fariñas, better known as ‘El Príncipe de la Diana.’

The Timbalaye Festival is held every year to promote the African roots in and influence on Cuban culture.

Timbalaye is a term that belongs to the Oracle of Ifa, from the Yoruba religion of Nigeria, and means strength and security.
