Havana, October 29 (RHC)-- Cuban photographer Brian Canelles won the grand prize of the 1st Alicia Alonso International Dance Photography Contest.

The jury announced the winners on Thursday, October 28th, marking the 73rd anniversary of Cuba’s flagship classical dance Company Ballet Nacional de Cuba founded by prima ballerina assoluta, the late Alicia Alonso.

The jury, presided over by visual artist Gabriel Dávalos, assessed nearly 1700 works by more than 250 artists from around the world.

Dedicated to celebrate the work and professionalism of Cuban dancers anywhere in the world, the event recognized works by Cuban and foreign artists from Spain, Mexico, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Germany, South Africa and Peru.

The winning works will form a traveling exhibition that will be inaugurated in Havana in December, as part of activities on the 101st birthday anniversary of dance legend Alicia Alonso-to be celebrated on December 21st.

Organized by Matria Creative Project, the 1st Alicia Alonso International Photography Contest was held with support also from the Cuban Ministry of Culture, the José Martí Cultural Society and UNESCO.
