Upon being presented the award, the choreographer and former ballerina said that she was overwhelmed. Alonso, who created many balletic roles and excelled in the famous romantic part of Giselle, made the statement at the Cadiz Town Hall.  

The prize, with which the 28th Iberian-American Theater Festival in that city opened, recognizes her long career on stage in Cuba and the world.  

Following the decoration, Cuban National Ballet Company premier dancers, Anette Delgado and Dani Hernández, danced Coopelia, choreographed by Alonso, to open the outstanding theater gathering, which is being attended by companies and  artists from  Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico and Spain.
