Alfredo Sosabravo' artwork 'Atletismo'

Havana, Jan. 19 (RHC)-- Cuban painter, draftsman, engraver and ceramist Alfredo Sosabravo, considered one of the most important Cuban visual artists, is representing the country at the 9th Beijing International Art Biennale (BIAB-2022), which opened January 18th at the National Art Museum of China.

A National Visual Art Prize laureate, Sosabravo will participate with his work "Atletismo" –an acrylic painting on canvas from 2008.

The artwork "Atletismo" is in perfect tune with the main theme of the Art Biennale ‘The Light of Life’. It symbolizes peace, unity, friendship and brightness, which will shine in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, and the strong spirit of perseverance shown by humanity in the current global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Representing my country –Cuba- at this important event in China is a great honor and a privilege,’ Sosabravo said.

At 91, Alfredo Sosabravo continues very active, creating new artworks. In statements to Xinhua news agency, he said he has used this time of necessary isolation to improve and further expand a new collection that he was to exhibit two year ago pieces, but which was postponed due to the Covid-19.

Pieces in this new collection include “La flor del año", a painting that recreates Covid-19 and includes also world figures like Pablo Picasso, Edith Piaf, John Lennon, Albert Einstein, among others.

First held in 2003, the Beijing International Art Biennale promotes global harmony through contemporary artwork exhibitions. It respects cultural diversity and dialogues between western and eastern cultures on an equal footing, thus gaining recognition and support from an increasing number of artists across the world.
